Tramp steamers are now a memory of a colonial past when small freighters sailed from port to port delivering and picking up freight. Fast turnarounds were routine, loading was done using local dockworkers who were also called stevedores. Holds were filled with canvas wrapped rice bales, barrels of whale oil, crated porcelain. After loading the stevedore supervised stowing, counting and sign the manifest for local customs.
